Critical and Curatorial Positions
It seems to me that some of the situational happenings/exhibitions/installations/conferences/seminars/events/gatherings etc.. seem to revolve around the dialog within the art community as to the validity of this type of art practice. A good majority of our readings speak more about practice than to the success of the work to make change in society. I wonder if some of the artist's desire to create original work is masked under the facade of a rejection to the standard gallery aesthetic and system. Hal Foster's concerns of "a risk of illegibility" and collaboration for the sake of collaboration are valid. I do think that this sort of practice is important and often is successful when done within the proper environment. Our own UCSC intervention project is probably doomed to really be successful because of the premise of the event. How can we really interrupt or intervene a community that is in attendance to see interruptions and interventions. The minute you call something an intervention it seizes to be one. Its like when your favorite underground band puts out that big label studio album and still tries to act like hardcore street kids.
