Both Hiller and Boltanski refer to collecting objects (the archive) as a means of warding off death. I dont know if most hoarders are all sub-consciously searching for immortality or if they just get comfort from collecting and organizing. Foucault said that archeology is basically trying to find if what was said was actually true and Freud commented that psychology was privileged over archeology because the mind held purer un-fragmented truths. Maybe uncovering someones collection is the best of both because you can decipher their emotional state while examining their physical artifacts. I think all art making is an attempt to archive and avoid being forgotten.
