After looking through the images of the Gerhard Richter’s Atlas, I could see more clearly what Buchloh was writing about. http://www.gerhard-richter.com/art/atlas.php
Buchloh’s essay examining the Atlas brought up some interesting points on the structure of Richter’s personal photographic archive for means of amassing visual imagery to draw from for his work. Looking at the Atlas as a whole, the images together in their order create another dialog about the meaning coming out of Richter’s work as well as about photography’s role as a marker in the archive and as a means of accessing memory. The term archive of the unconscious, which Merewether used in his essay about Japanese photography of and after the A-bombs, can apply to Richter’s Atlas.
