5 years ago, President Bush sent his Secretary of State Colin Powell to make the case to the United Nations Security Council that Iraq has been stockpiling and hiding weapons of mass destruction and has been continuing to work on and is possibly near the completion of building a nuclear bomb. This important speech sealed the case for the U.S. invasion of Iraq.
Yet it has be shown in great detail that the “proof” he gave was exaggerated and much of it was completely fabricated. No weapons of mass destruction were found, hundreds of thousands innocent human lives have been lost, 500 Billions dollars have been spent to date, with no end in site, and the United States has lost important credibility in the international community.
For this project I would like to pull quotes from the original transcripts of his speech and reorganize them into a short clip that would emphasize the key aspects of his speech. This re-organization would exaggerate his comments, thus emphasizing the exaggeration of the “proof”
Ironically, Colin Powell was one of the most trusted members by the American people and the international community, of those in the Bush Administration. The false presentation by someone we thought we trusted only reinforces the fact that the veracity of what we see, hear, and read in the media should always be questioned. His personal loss of credibility is just a microcosm to that of the credibility lost by the United States within world community, and both will take years to recover.
