Tate Talk

There is a really great 25 minute long talk given by Claire Bishop (editor of our Participation book) on "Utopias and Microtopias: Contemporary Art in the 1990's" from the Tate Museum's study days online lectures. She discusses the spectacle, Debord and hybrid performance installation art that has come in vogue since the 1990's, among other things relavant to the last reading. I thought it might be of interest given our upcoming gig and talk in class this week about all this. Here is an excerpt of some of what she says....

...the kind of work where the art is conceived as a context for social interaction and using the gallery as a social space. ... it is much more about including an audience within this and the experience of the gallery space. ...[it is a] hybrid of performance and installation art but it is a significant development of both. It differs from performance art in the viewers that perform in the space rather than the artist. And it differs from installation in which the work requires we use the space rather than just looking at it and deciphering it's meaning from the specific arrangement of objects. The emphasis in this kind of project is on the collective presence and interaction and on the dissolution of the commodifiable art object into a social encounter. ...
